SCALE PHYSICAL MODELS

Sophion Bioscience - Scale Model Project

Sophion Bioscience approached me about creating a scale model of their new machine, the Qube III, a patch clamping machine.

The Challenge:

The Qube III was not quite ready for a recent conference, but we wanted to provide a way to showcase their new machine.

Several hurdles had to be solved to get this project done.

  1. CAD is not 3D printable. It contains thousands of components, like screws, electronics, and sheet metal parts. None of this is easily transferred to 3D printed parts.

  2. Color accuracy was a key factor.

  3. 24 inches is a large “miniature”!

The Solution

Parts were printed components using a combination of FDM and resin printers for higher complexity features.

The parts were then airbrushed, and glued or screwed together.

The use of heat set inserts was crucial, as it allowed me to change parts without having to deal with glue.

Lights, a battery, and charging port were added to enhance the visibility of the work surface components.
